Examination Information

The American Board of Managed Care Nursing (ABMCN) Certified Managed Care Nurse (CMCN) and Certified Managed Care Professional (CMCP) examination is available through proctoring. Proctors may administer the exam in paper format or on a computer with secure internet access.

There are multiple options for you to find an acceptable proctor:

  • Your supervisor, manager, human resources or continuing education representative can proctor your exam

  • Anyone who already is CMCN or CMCP certified may proctor your exam

  • The exam is offered at both of AAMCN’s annual conferences

  • You may take the exam at your local library, college, or testing center that offers proctoring services

  • We offer a remote proctoring option through a third party (you must have a stable internet connection and a webcam)

The examination itself will consist of approximately 200 multiple-choice questions having only one correct response.  The exam will focus on vocabulary, concepts, and application of managed care in today’s healthcare environment as outlined in the candidates guide and will take up to four hours to complete.  Your examination must be completed within four hours.

Please be advised that in order to take this examination, you must meet all eligibility requirements set forth in the candidates guide. Please Click Here to purchase the preparatory course.  Once you have completed the prescribed course work, you have 4 months to arrange to sit for the ABMCN examination.

The preparatory course is available from the American Association of Managed Care Nurses (AAMCN).  Please visit www.aamcn.org to order the home study course.   The AAMCN faculty have outstanding professional credentials and expertise which complements the competencies defined by the ABMCN.

The ABMCN does not sponsor, endorse, or benefit financially from any AAMCN course work or materials used to prepare for the ABMCN board examination. Candidates may provide an affidavit that attests to completion of equivalent course work taken elsewhere.  An affidavit would consist of your resume, educational background, and a signed job description.

In order to participate in the examination, you must complete the Application for Certification for Managed Care Nursing in its entirety and submit your current professional license and the completed agreement to proctor.

Upon approval of your application, the ABMCN will send your examination materials to your proctor. If you choose to take the exam on paper, the proctor will receive the exam materials by Fed-Ex three business days prior to your exam date. If you have opted to take the exam online, the proctor will be emailed the exam access information two business days prior to your exam date. Once we receive your exam, you will be notified by mail of the passing or failing of your exam. We cannot give scores through email or by phone.  With a passing score of 70%, you will then be able to use the credential of CMCN in your professional signature and will be required to maintain the credential through continuing education.  The CMCN credential is valid for 3 years. In the event, you do not pass the exam, you may re-apply and send in a new application, payment and proctor form.
